About
This is a personal notebook, not a publication. Entries get written when something has cost me enough time to be worth writing down, which works out to a few times a year. There is no schedule and no feed to subscribe to.
What is here
Typography as it is actually practised on screens: line length, vertical rhythm, alignment, contrast, and the compromises forced by the fact that you do not control the reader's window, font stack, or ambient light.
Where a claim can be checked, it is stated as something checkable. Where it is taste, it is labelled as taste. A lot of typographic advice circulates as rules when it is really the residue of one person's habits, and the two are worth keeping apart.
What is not here
Font recommendations, tool reviews, and anything that would go stale in a year. There are better places for those, kept by people who enjoy maintaining them.
Colophon
Static HTML and one stylesheet, written by hand. Body text is Georgia, with the reader's system sans for navigation and captions. No web fonts, so nothing reflows halfway through loading and there is no third party to leak a request to. No JavaScript, no analytics, no cookies.
The dark palette is a separate set of values rather than a filter over the light one, for the reasons in the note on dark themes.
